Lectio Divina.

Read = Lectio

This ancient practice of prayerfully reading Scripture creates a spiritual space for us to meet and converse with God our Father. Spend a few moments preparing your heart and ask Jesus to meet you in his Word.

  • Read the Scripture passage slowly, letting the words sink in.

  • What stands out for you? Note it down.

Meditate = Meditatio

Meditation moves you to thinking about how and why of the Scripture passage. It is a search for deeper meaning in what you have read just as Mary pondered the Word of God in her heart.

  • Why did that word or phrase capture your attention?

  • Read the passage again. Do not expect an answer right away.

  • What is God saying to you about your life?

Pray = Oratio

Meditating on the Word of God tends to move our heart and overflow into a response of prayer.

  • Talk to Jesus. Are you moved to examine your life, give thanks, ask more questions?

Contemplate = Contemplatio

When all words are exhausted, sit with Jesus as you would with a friend, enjoying his presence.

  • You may wish to picture yourself with him or picture yourself in the Scripture passage.

Action = Operatio

This last step is based on your prayerful meditation to conform your life more perfectly to Jesus and to bring his Word into the world. With this step, you respond to not just in prayer but in action as well.

  • Ask, “Lord, what do you want me to do?”
